The 5 Oldest Players to Compete in the CONMEBOL Copa América 2024™

Three of them were champions of the world’s oldest national team tournament.

The CONMEBOL Copa América 2024™ is now part of the rich history of a tournament with 48 editions and legendary players who have shone over the years.


In the United States, experienced players proved they still had plenty to give. Peru, with an average age of 29.1 years, Chile (28.8), and Argentina (28.5) were the three teams with the highest average ages. All three teams had players in the Top 5 oldest players of the tournament.


The 5 Oldest Players


1-Claudio Bravo: Chile, 41 years, 68 days


The goalkeeper played two matches in the U.S., bringing his total appearances to 27 in the world’s oldest national team tournament, ranking among the top 10 players with the most appearances. Across seven editions, he won the title in 2015 and 2016. After the tournament, he announced his retirement from professional football.

2-Paolo Guerrero: Peru, 40 years, 171 days


The striker played all three of Peru’s matches in the latest edition, bringing his total to 28 tournament appearances. The U.S. edition was his sixth Copa América.

3-Luis Suárez: Uruguay, 37 years, 149 days


The "Pistolero" played four matches and scored one goal—against Canada— in the tournament’s last edition. Over five editions, he has made 19 appearances, scoring 8 goals, and was a champion in 2011. He retired from the national team during the September World Cup qualifiers.

4-Alexander Domínguez: Ecuador, 37 years, 15 days


Ecuador’s goalkeeper played in all four of his team’s matches in the U.S. It was his fifth edition of the tournament, with 13 appearances overall.


5-Lionel Messi: Argentina, 36 years, 362 days


The legendary number 10 lifted his second CONMEBOL Copa América™ title (the first in 2021), played in all five of Argentina’s matches, and became the player with the most appearances in the tournament (39). He has played in seven editions, with a total of 14 goals.
