  • Brazil finished as runners-up.

Pelé (Edson Arantes do Nascimento) was born on October 23, 1940, and passed away on December 29, 2022. He was one of the greatest football stars in the world and experienced what it was like to play in the oldest national team tournament in the world.

"O Rei" participated in the 1959 edition, where he scored 8 goals in 6 matches: Chile (two goals), Paraguay (hat-trick), Peru, Bolivia, and Argentina all fell victim to Pelé's goal-scoring prowess. He did not score against Uruguay.

Brazil won 4 matches and drew 2 but ended up finishing second behind Argentina (5 wins and 1 draw).

This was the only time Pelé played in the CONMEBOL Copa América™. O Rei had a glorious career, highlighted by three World Cup victories: 1958, 1962, and 1970.

He also won two CONMEBOL Libertadores titles with Santos, in 1962 and 1963.
