A Group Stage match that will feel like a knockout round is what the fans who’ll pack GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri will be looking forward to on Monday night.

The hosts of CONMEBOL Copa América have their backs against the wall after losing to Panama during matchday two. Meanwhile, Uruguay only needs a draw or a win to secure their place in the Quarterfinals after winning their opening two matches. With such a monumental occasion, the scenarios for Monday’s match look like this, with the result of the Panama-Bolivia match also playing a factor:

  • If Uruguay wins or draws, it qualifies for the Quarterfinals.

  • If Uruguay loses to the United States and Panama beats Bolivia, the tiebreakers will decide who qualifies between USA, Uruguay and Panama (all three with 6 points won).

  • If Panama wins and the USA doesn't win its match, Uruguay and Panama go to the next stage.

  • If the United States wins and Panama doesn't beat Bolivia, Uruguay and the United States go through.

  • If Bolivia beats Panama and Uruguay defeats USA, Uruguay will qualify and the second place will be defined by tiebreakers between Bolivia, USA and Panama (each with 3 points).

To sum it all up, the United States will likely need to beat Uruguay to have the best chance of reaching the knockout rounds, and will need additional help in the Panama-Bolivia game to make that happen. Meanwhile, Uruguay just needs to take care of business against the United States by earning a point to go through. The pressure is on for the hosts, who don’t want to leave the tournament just yet, but face a difficult challenge with Marcelo Bielsa’s Uruguay. The 15-time tournament champions flew past Panama and Bolivia in their first two games with a combined score of 8-1. The United States defeated Bolivia 2-0 before losing to their Concacaf rivals Panama 2-1 in round two.

Both teams have it all to play for on Monday night which should bring one of the most exciting matchdays of the tournament to date, an appropriate finale to this Group C of the oldest national teams tournament in world football.

Key Facts

  • The United States and Uruguay will face each other in CONMEBOL Copa América™ for the first time since the 1993 edition (1-0 for Uruguay). La Celeste has won four of their last five matches against CONCACAF opponents in the competition (1L) and has kept a clean sheet in three of those five games.
  • Uruguay's two victories against the United States were in the only two non-friendly matches they played (3-0) at the Paris Olympics in 1924 and 1-0 in the 1993 CONMEBOL Copa América™). Uruguay is the only CONMEBOL team that has not been able to beat the United States while playing in North America.
  • Uruguay began the 2024 CONMEBOL Copa América™ with two consecutive wins. La Celeste has not started with three victories in a row since 1959, when they defeated Ecuador (4-0), Brazil (3-0), and Argentina (5-0) in the second tournament held that year in Ecuador.
  • Darwin Núñez and Maximiliano Araújo scored in their first two CONMEBOL Copa América™ matches. Only four Uruguay players have scored in their first three matches in the competition: Pedro Petrone (1923), Mario Bergara (1959), Vladas Douskas (1959), and Jorge Oyarbide (1967).
  • Joe Scally, from the United States, is the player in Group C of the 2024 CONMEBOL Copa América™ who has received the most fouls (8).
