The new record Lionel Messi could achieve at CONMEBOL Copa América 2024™

The Rosario native could play in his fifth final at oldest national team tournament in the world, surpassing a compatriot.

CONMEBOL Copa América™
  • Previously, the number 10 played in the finals of the 2007, 2015, 2016, and 2021 editions
  • He would surpass Javier Mascherano.

Lionel Messi achieved two records already at CONMEBOL Copa América 2024™: with his debut against Canada in the opening match, he became the player with the most appearances in the history of the tournament; in the semifinal, also against the North American team, the Rosario native scored a goal, thus equaling Zizinho: both scored in 6 different editions of the tournament.

The match that will close the tournament holds the possibility of a new record for the 37-year-old player: if he plays, he would become the player with the most CONMEBOL Copa América™ finals.

Messi already had four: 2007, 2015, 2016, and 2021. He was equaled by his compatriot Javier Mascherano, with whom he had shared the field in the first three. "El Jefecito" did not participate in the 2021 final but had played in a final before, in 2004 against Brazil. With the match on July 14 against Colombia at Hard Rock Stadium, Messi would stand alone as the only player to have played in five finals of the oldest national team tournament in the world.

Thus, Messi would leave the United States with a third record to his name. There is a fourth possible but difficult: Lio has 14 goals in the seven editions of the tournament he has played in and is three goals away from Zizinho and Méndez, the top scorers in the history of the tournament.
